November 1898 Driftwood...carapace. Stone, and wave. It has begun, the season of dampness and shadow. A few days ago we stood here, contemplating things in silence, like always. Ink of blue beyond the far horizon, far as the eye could see and mind imagine. No folds of cloud to texture the lambent expanse of sky and sea. Then, yesterday evening, we felt the shift. A slight chill to the breeze. Our honu companions aren’t basking here today, presaging the cold months to come, this beach’s sand swept away by the onslaught of waves from the far north—arriving as mountainous surf, ocean surge. I wonder where they go to rest when their feeding is done, to gather the warming pulse of sun. And now, as dusk deepens, in the distance a column of rain falls straight down onto the windless ocean... ...driftwood, carapace. Bone of coral, rain.

about

It begins in the blinding sun and ends at the edge of the ocean.
In between, a denizen of the underground leaves home; a rare bird soars; and a lonely beast walks through the forest before falling asleep and dreaming...

Illuminated Beasts finds Daniel Panasenko using traditional instruments, homemade instruments, and found objects to explore the intersection of music, sound design, and film narrative.

Composer's note: The Inuit-inspired throat singing presented on “Homecoming” is done so with the utmost respect for the Inuit and their culture. I hope my enthusiasm for this ancient art form will compel listeners to learn more and support the Indigenous artists who perform it. -DP
